At Cocktails & Caregivers, we receive thousands of stories about caregivers who are walking through fire to care for children, grandchildren, parents, spouses, and other immediate family members. Our featured Caregiver, Melissa, is in our foundation’s history, the first caregiver for her twin sister, Lana. As Melissa shared in her application for our Keeping Caregivers Close Grant, “Even as I write those words, they don’t feel real. We’ve shared every milestone in life — birthdays, secrets, dreams, and laughter but nothing could have prepared us for this chapter.”
Lana was diagnosed with Stage 4 Bile Duct cancer, and from that moment, their worlds shifted as Melissa went from sister to caregiver. Suddenly, every day became about appointments, test results, and new medical terms that Melissa never imagined needing to understand. She has made it her mission to be by Lana’s side through it all; scheduling appointments, sitting in consultations, asking every question that needs to be asked, and keeping careful notes so nothing slips through the cracks.

At home, Lana’s focus is on helping her stay strong. She is making sure she’s eating well, resting, and staying calm and positive. Melissa has also stepped in to help with her kids, making sure they have the emotional and academic support they need. Melissa shares that Lana’s kids have been incredibly brave, but as an aunt, it is hard to watch the worry in their eyes. Melissa’s mission is to remind each other every day that love and laughter still belong in our home, even in the hardest moments.
In September, the twins traveled from Chicago to MD Anderson for a consultation to continue to explore all treatment options for Lana. At Cocktails & Caregivers, we know that traveling for care is not easy or inexpensive, but it’s a path that is so essential to the cancer journey.
“As her twin, this journey cuts deep. There’s something indescribable about watching the person who shares your face, your history, and your heartbeat fight such a battle,” says Melissa. Melissa also shared that she sees Lana’s strength in the way she smiles through fatigue, the way she comforts others even when she’s the one in pain. “She inspires me every single day.”
“Being her caregiver isn’t something I ever expected, but it’s something I feel called to do. Our bond is unbreakable. We’ve shared everything in life, and now, we share this fight. With love, humor, and faith, we walk this road together, side by side, as we always have.”
We cannot thank Melissa enough for sharing this perspective and her caregiving journey.
