When life takes unexpected turns, the strength and resilience of family hold everything together. Shawn, mother from Huntsville, AL, has stepped into the role of caregiver for her daughter Kara, who lives in California. The ultimate act of a mother’s love and dedication no matter how old your children are.

Kara’s Battle with Cancer

Kara, a dedicated professional in the higher-education field and a single mother, has been fighting a relentless battle against cancer. She was first diagnosed with colon cancer, for which she completed chemotherapy last year. However, the relief was short-lived. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Kara was recently diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic colon cancer. This aggressive cancer has spread to her ovaries and continues to progress elsewhere.

In April, Kara underwent an oophorectomy to remove her ovaries. In May she began targeted treatment. This treatment aims to reduce the number of tumors, but it comes with its own set of challenges.

Despite these obstacles, there is hope.

Shawn: A Beacon of Strength and Love

As Kara navigates this difficult journey, Shawn, her mother, as well as her sisters, have become her unwavering pillars of support. Stepping into the role of caregiver, Shawn is not only caring for her daughter but also helping care for her granddaughter Bernice. The emotional and physical demands of caregiving are immense, but Shawn’s love and dedication drive her forward each day. We’re so happy to share that through our Keeping Caregivers Close program, we can financially assist Shawn as she travels from Alabama to California.
