Two Toddlers, One Job, and a Husband with Cancer: Why Childcare Help Meant Everything

For Jessica Horgan, mornings are not quiet reflections with coffee in hand, but instead, a juggling act between caring for two toddlers, preparing for a demanding workday at her arts nonprofit, and checking on her husband Mike—her partner, her love, and now, her patient.

Mike was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer just days before Christmas in 2024. What should have been a season of joy turned into a whirlwind of fear, grief, and hard decisions. Ten days after sharing his diagnosis with his employer, he was laid off. The financial weight shifted entirely to Jessica, who already carried the emotional and physical responsibilities.

But this story isn’t just about a burden. It’s also about resilience.

As Michael undergoes grueling chemotherapy treatments, Jessica has stepped into the role of not only caregiver but also solo parenting for their two young children, Rosaleen (3.5) and Daniel (2). The demands of working full-time, managing household responsibilities, and being there for her husband and children have left her with little time to care for herself. Like many caregivers, she constantly prioritizes others, often forgetting to pause for even the simplest self-care moments—eating, resting, or taking a breath.

Caregiving isn’t just about medication schedules and hospital visits. It’s about invisible decisions made every hour, sacrifices unnoticed by the world, and strength that even the caregiver herself doesn’t always feel.

Jessica’s story is a reflection of so many others—of caregivers who rise every day to care for those they love, while trying not to lose themselves in the process. There is beauty in this life: in the tiny smiles of children, in a husband’s hand squeezed back in gratitude, in knowing that you’re doing the most important work of all.

And yet, there is also real hardship.

If you know a caregiver, offer to help. Listen. Show up. And if you are a caregiver—like Jessica—know that your story matters, your work is seen, and your love is powerful beyond measure.
